Requirements

  • You need an empty save file.

Instructions

  1. At the File Select Screen, start an empty file and type in a name.
  2. Slowly pull out the left side of the cartridge until the sound becomes distorted. When it does, select 'End'.
  3. After the game finishes saving the data and takes you back to the File Select Screen, push the cartridge back in.
  4. Select the new game file and open it.

Result

If you did the glitch correctly, Link will have no sword or shield during the starting movie, and after the starting movie ends, Link will die immediately. When you respawn, you'll notice that Link has no life hearts, sword or shield.

Additional Results

  • The Items and Masks Subscreens are both completely filled with usable Ocarinas of Time. When you start, you'll have one of these Ocarinas equipped to all three C-buttons -- that is, the same Ocarina on all three buttons.
  • Any writing that appears on the C-buttons or the B button will be rimmed with green instead of black; the text returns to normal after you obtain magic power.
  • After you get turned into Deku Link, pressing B makes you pull out his pipes (the Ocarina); this stops working after you get magic power.
  • After you've finished talking to the Happy Mask Salesman, talk to him again and he'll teach you the Song of Healing immediately because you already have the Ocarina(s) of Time.
  • If you gain or lose health, you'll be killed (because the game will "increase" your health to its maximum of 0, at which point it'll notice that you have no health, and kill you).
  • Destroyed bushes will drop bombs and arrows even though you don't have the Hero's Bow or a Bomb Bag, and if you collect some dropped bombs they will appear on the Items Subscreen despite your lack of a Bomb Bag to carry them in. Sometimes you may be able to use these Bombs without having the Bomb Bag. Collecting dropped arrows does not give you the Hero's Bow, however.
  • Any masks or items you get will overwrite the Ocarina in their place; Bottles, however, do not do this.
  • Collecting four Pieces of Heart will increase your health meter by one heart, the first putting you up to a total of one Heart Container. When you have one heart of health, the game constantly makes the beeping noise that indicates you're almost dead.
  • If you collect the missing part of the Great Fairy and then talk to her, she'll give you magic power like normal, but she'll also heal you; this, of course, kills you, and when you come back to life, you'll automatically start talking to her and she'll heal you; this, of course, kills you, and when you come back to life, you'll automatically start talking to her and she'll heal you; this, of course, kills you, and when you come back to life, you'll automatically start talking to her and she'll heal you; this, of course, kills you, and when you come back to life, you'll automatically start talking to her and she'll heal you; this, of course, kills you, and when you come back to life, you'll automatically... And so on. You'll end up trapped in an endless cycle of revival and death, and you'll have to turn off the N64 to end it.
If you talk to her after you've got a Heart Container, she'll give you magic like normal and you'll be free to walk away.
  • Once you have magic, you can take the Bombers' challenge; do so as normal Link and make sure the last Bomber kid you catch is the one in West Clock Town (this might not be necessary). Once you catch the last one, the screen fades to white and then freezes; you'll have to reset to fix it.

Notes

This trick is actually a way of duplicating a certain hardware error that occurs when the cartridge is not inserted properly or otherwise cannot be "read" properly by the N64. This error causes any saved files to not appear, and if a new file is started, all saved data is written as zeros -- or not written at all.

If this happens to you, turning off the N64, taking out the cartridge and then firmly reinserting it should cause your save files to reappear and your game to write data properly.
